I have always been a photojournalist at heart. I try to bring that aspect of photography to everything I photograph – from weddings to galas to performances. I document people as they are. And through this work, I have the opportunity to meet and interact with organizations and people that do such amazing work, with worthy missions and the drive to support others.
So I was grateful to work with San Diego’s Burn Institute. This organization works to reduce fires and burn injuries through education, but it also empowers those affected by burn trauma. The Institute offers support programs, financial assistance, education for coping skills, as well as a sense of community.
The Burn Institute’s annual summer camp program, Camp Beyond the Scars, does just that for children who have experienced a burn injury. The week-long program takes place in Chula Vista, and provides kids of all ages a week of fun – think swimming, sports, crafts – paired with a supportive and safe environment to spend time with others with similar life experiences.
It was so amazing to document some of the week’s activities and to see the impact of this camp for not only the children, but the volunteers and counselors as well. I’m happy to share a sampling of my time with Camp Beyond the Scars.
